Guidelines for IT Strategy Development

DO
  • Be Business led - not technology led
  • Develop close co-operation between individual users and the technical support staff
  • Define the generic benefits:-
  • efficiency (cost savings)
  • effectiveness (higher return on assets)
  • strategic advantage (business growth)
  • Be explicit about expectations and proactively manage expectations throughout the organisation
  • Pay attention to the quality of your plans - both strategic and operational
  • Involve the right people in the process employed to formulate the strategic and operating plans
  • Revise and update the plan to keep it relevent and on course
DON'T
  • Delegate strategy formation in its entirety to a consultant (either external or internal)
  • Relegate the "human" issue to "later"
  • Expect the world to stay the same while you implement your strategy
